Shanganagh Castle

Shanganagh Castle Estate in Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, is one of Europe’s largest Passivhaus-certified public housing developments, delivering 550 energy-efficient homes across 449,068 ft². Designed by ABK Architects, the project is a landmark in sustainable social housing.  

It also represents a defining moment for the Land Development Agency. As the first initiative backed by the LDA, Shanganagh reflects the agency’s leadership in reshaping Ireland’s housing future by championing Passivhaus not as an exception, but as the emerging standard for public development. By supporting this scale of ambition, the LDA is pushing high-performance design from the margins to the mainstream.  

Mosart served as Passivhaus consultant, leading energy modelling, thermal bridge assessments, and DEAP evaluations. The project involved 11 building blocks under a Design & Build contract, the development of accessible ventilation strategies, integration of district heating to mitigate summer overheating, and the delivery of brick façades with external cavities all while meeting the uncompromising standards of Passivhaus.
