Urbanest, Battersea
Urbanest Battersea is a landmark mixed-use development providing 853 student bedspaces across three interconnected buildings in London’s Nine Elms, opposite the Battersea Power Station regeneration zone. Completed in 2024 and certified by the Passivhaus Institute, the development holds the distinction of being the largest certified Passivhaus building in the UK and the largest Passivhaus student accommodation scheme in Europe. Mosart acted as co-Passivhaus designer, working alongside the project team to support delivery of the standard at a scale and complexity that broke new ground for the sector.
Designed by AHMM and built by Mace, the scheme demonstrates that Passivhaus performance is achievable in high-rise, high-density urban development. Each student room benefits from ultra-low energy demand, continuous filtered fresh air and consistent thermal comfort throughout the year.
The project represents a significant reference point for Passivhaus in the UK’s purpose-built student accommodation sector and a model for future large-scale certified schemes.
