Galway City Council – Pathfinder
Galway City Council appointed Mosart to lead its Pathfinder decarbonisation programme across two community centres, Knocknacarra and Ballinfoile, targeting a 50% reduction in carbon emissions and primary energy use, a minimum BER Grade B, and a long-term pathway to zero emissions by 2050. The programme was developed in response to public sector obligations under Ireland’s Climate Action Plan to set and achieve measurable building performance targets.
Retrofit solutions across both buildings included cavity wall insulation, triple-glazed units, solar film on existing glazing, airtightness improvements, air source heat pumps, upgraded ventilation, PV panels and enhanced building controls. Alongside the immediate interventions, Mosart developed a strategy to address the council’s longer-term 2050 obligations, ensuring the works form part of a coherent decarbonisation plan rather than a one-off upgrade.
Both buildings have exceeded their performance targets. The communities that use these facilities now benefit from significantly improved comfort, lower running costs and spaces that are fit for decades of continued use.
