How to prepare for the Passivhaus Designer exam

The CPHD exam is open book, about three hours, and set by the Passive House Institute. Here is how the people who pass comfortably actually prepare for it.

The Certified Passivhaus Designer exam trips people up for a reason that has nothing to do with intelligence. It is open book, roughly three hours, and set centrally by the Passive House Institute. Candidates hear “open book” and quietly downgrade how much they need to prepare. Then they meet a paper that rewards fluency, not lookup, and the ones who treated the reference material as a safety net rather than a working tool run out of time.

We have put more than 4,500 people through Passivhaus training, and the pattern among those who pass comfortably is consistent. Here is what they do.

Understand what the exam is testing

The paper mixes short calculations with judgement questions. Size this ventilation duty. Read this junction and find the weak point. Check whether this energy balance holds together. It is building physics applied to one job: designing a building that reaches a space heating demand of 15 kWh/m²a and proving it.

That framing matters because it tells you what to practise. The exam is not asking you to recite the definition of a thermal bridge. It is asking you to notice one in a detail you have not seen before and do something about it. Recall gets you almost nothing. Applied judgement gets you through.

Learn PHPP by using it, not watching it

Every serious candidate says the same thing afterwards: the PHPP work was the preparation. The Passive House Planning Package is the model behind every certified building, and the exam assumes you can move around it under time pressure.

Watching someone else drive PHPP is comfortable and nearly useless. The skill the paper tests is knowing where a value lives, how a change in one worksheet ripples into another, and roughly what a sensible answer looks like before you calculate it. That only comes from building models yourself. This is also why it is worth insisting on training that includes the full software rather than a demo version. You cannot rehearse on a tool that is missing the worksheets the real one has.

Practise on a real building

The candidates who struggle are rarely short of knowledge. They are short of practice against the clock. The fix is to model a real building while you learn: your own house, a live project, anything with drawings you can measure.

A real building forces the questions the exam will ask. What is the treated floor area, and why does the boundary sit where it does. Where are the thermal bridges, and what happens to the heating demand when you calculate them properly instead of assuming a default. How much does the form factor cost you. Work through those on a building you understand and the exam questions stop feeling abstract.

Build your reference material before the day, not on it

Open book is a trap if your book is a stack of unfamiliar PDFs. The people who use it well have already tabbed and organised their course notes and PHPP so that finding a value takes seconds, not minutes. In a three hour paper, the two minutes you lose hunting for a figure is two minutes you do not have.

A simple test in the week before: give yourself a past style question and time how long it takes to locate every reference you need. If it is slow, your material is not ready, and no amount of extra reading fixes that. Reorganising does.

Manage the three hours like a design review

Treat the paper the way you would treat a review with a hard stop. Read the whole thing first and bank the questions you can answer quickly. Do not spend twenty minutes on a five mark calculation while a judgement question you would breeze through sits untouched. Show your working, because a method that is visible can earn marks even when a final number slips. And keep an eye on the clock the way you would keep an eye on a fee: it is the resource that actually runs out.

What the credential is worth once you have it

Pass, and you hold the Certified Passivhaus Designer title for five years, recognised in every country the standard operates in. The Designer and Consultant titles cover identical content and the same exam; the Designer title goes to candidates with a recognised design qualification, the Consultant title to everyone else. Same standing, same value in the market.

And the market is the point. Demand for people who can run the model and answer a certifier’s query is moving faster than the supply of people who can do it. That gap is the reason to sit the exam, and it is why we cover the fuller picture in how to become a Certified Passivhaus Designer.
